Climate Week 2017  -  Bigger than ever!

Climate Change themed Library Events in Aberdeenshire Libraries
Kids Competition:  (5 to 8 year olds, and  9 years and over):  Make a ‘car of the future’ out of recycled materials, closing date of 25th March 2017. Download details [here].

 Donside Hydro Guided Walk    by ACEnergy, RSPB, Aberdeen Rangers Service
14:00    at Donmouth, by the bird hide on the Esplanade
Ranger Simon Whitworth will be leading this walk along the river Don, pointing out wildlife on route to the Donside Hydro project. Jane Fullerton, ACEnergy, will then give a guided tour around the Hydro. The Donside Hydro harnesses energy from its neighbouring river – The Don – to create electricity which is then sold to the national grid. Income generated from the project will be channelled into initiatives that achieve social and environmental benefits for the local regeneration area. 

Film Screening – “Just Do It” by Aberdeen Climate Action

The film film "Just Do It" gives a true and humourous inside look at activism, with its beauty, planning, energy and ingrained moral drivers. Never again will you take the media's depiction of these protectors at face value! (Documentary. Download the activists help-guide here)

School Class from Banff Primary School invited along to a Storytelling Event with Pauline Cordiner, from Grampian Association of Storytellers. Stories about Environmental Issues & Climate Change.

Talk - How Does Food Shape Our Urban Lives? by Carolyn Steel, author of "Hungry City, How Food Shapes Our Lives", organised by RGU Go Green

How do you Feed a city? Everyone is welcome to this one-of-a-kind talk on food security and the history of farming.  Carolyn Steel is a leading thinker on food and cities. Her 2008 book Hungry City: How Food Shapes  Our Lives is an international bestseller, and her concept of ‘sitopia’(food-place) is widely recognized in the field of food urbanism. Carolyn has taught at Cambridge University, London Metropolitan University and the London School of Economics. A director of Kilburn Nightingale Architects in London, she is in international demand as a speaker, including a talk at TEDGlobal in 2008. Facebook event site here.

 Go Green’s Zero Waste Café    by RGU Go Green
18:00 - 20:00  at Ruthrieston Community Centre
This popular zero-waste café has been running for over half a year now. This night will be the culmination and a celebration of all of Go Green’s activities with a free delicious meal , good live music and an interesting exhibition. Everybody is welcome to come celebrate with us – on the house!
 

Film Screening – “Merchants of Doubt”  by  Aberdeen Climate Action
19:00  at  Vue Cinema Aberdeen
Join us for a screening of this impressive and unique film “Merchants of Doubt”! A gripping expose of how a small group of people and companies manage to misinform governments and millions of people, in so doing cause destruction and death, yet use the same techniques time and again, for Tobacco, Climate Change, Flame Retardants, GMO's  etc.
In these times of Alternative Facts, Fake News, and escalating populism this film contains essential understanding.

Presentation on RENEWABLES  by Home Energy Scotland
3pm-4pm at the Central Library in Aberdeen.
We have a presentation including specialist renewables advisors and Ross Henderson, a homeowner from Inverurie who is part of the Greener Homes Network in Central Library to answer any questions about what renewables are suitable for the home and hints and tips on the process of installing renewable measures. Saturday 25th March 2017

Tempo Cafe stand and display
In the Tempo Cafe (Bon Accord Centre, ground floor) there will be an information stand and a working display of Climate Change effects by the Kittybrewster School, some general information boards to make you think about action, on what you can do.  It's also a great place to unwind, have a coffee and a cake, with a kids play corner, all without breaking the bank as well as proceeds going to a good cause!

On the first floor there will be a stand by the Aberdeen Multicultural Centre and Aberdeen Climate Action, jointly, with information of Climate Change in a global context, illustrating the importance of acting together, globally and locally. If we don't the impacts will hit us all, and if we do act we'll promote harmony and peace in the process!
Silent Squirrel Spotting Safari   by Aberdeen Countryside Rangers
7:00 – 9:00  at Hazlehead Woods (in the morning!)
Join the Countryside Rangers on an early morning journey jaunt to find signs of the woods’ red squirrel population. Perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to see one of the squirrels!These woodsare being managed to make them more climate change resistant and better for biodiversity.
Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather, and bring a hot drink if you wish.
Meet at the far end of the West Chapel Hazlehead Crematorium car park.

Maud – Auchnagatt Cycle  with the Aberdeenshire Rangers, Aberdeenshire Council
10.00 – 13:00   at Aden Country Park
Enjoy a circular cycle ride from Aden Country Park to Auchnagatt, returning via the Formartine & Buchan Way. 15 miles, moderate to easy with only a couple of short hills. Bennachie Cycle with the Aberdeenshire Rangers, Aberdeenshire Council
10.00am – 13.00pm
An opportunity to discover parts of Bennachie by bike on a 3.7 mile cycle on a route consisting of a mixture of paths and forestry tracks that incorporates gradual inclines and descents. Bikes must be suitable for forestry tracks. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Booking is essential

The challenges of Diversification from Oil, Arms &  Nuclear Weapons to Alternative Energy  by Aberdeen Climate Action and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
14:30 - 16:30  at University of Aberdeen, New Kings 10
Panel Discussion on the Challenges of diversifying the Scottish, particularly the North East's, economy away from Oil & Gas, and Nuclear, to Alternative Energy. The Lucas Plan Documentary (35m) will be shown as inspiration, followed by a panel and audience discussion on how a change in industry can occur, towards alternative energies and disarmament, with the drive coming from the workers. The event will be chaired by Fiona Napier, ATUC; speakers are Jelte Harnmeijer, Hutton Institute, expert on community renewable energy; Erik Dalhuijsen, ACA, Petroleum Engineer; Veronika Tudhope, Scottish CND; Myshele Haywood, Green Party.

Outreach and Earthlings by Vegan Outreach Scotland
11am-5pm, at St Nicholas Street Plaza
Vegan Outreach Scotland and Aberdeen Earthlings Experience are joining forces to host an Outreach and Earthlings event! There will be an outreach/information stand with vegan food samples, leaflets, and other giveaways. We will be leafleting and talking to the public, or for those who prefer a less interactive role you can don a mask and participate in the Earthlings demo showing recent undercover footage from British slaughterhouses and farms.
Because what we eat plays such a huge role in our approach to our environment and the climate!

EARTH HOUR Walk    by Aberdeenshire Council Rangers
19:30 - 21:30    at Delgaty Woods
Why spend Earth Hour huddled around a candle when you could be out in Delgaty Woods, under the stars, enjoying a hot drink by a roaring fire?  All electrical devices, including torches are banned – can you handle it?  Join the Aberdeenshire Rangers for an hour of down-to-earth, back-to-nature living.  Bring food and drink to share or just eat it all yourself! Free event but booking is essential.
Meeting point: At the southern entrance to Delgaty Woods, near the Mill of Delgaty; OS Landranger Map 29 grid ref. NJ 758 496.  Postcode: AB53 8HL –sat-nav users, head east from this point a couple of hundred yards to the entrance to Delgaty Woods.  This is NOT the main Castle car park or the one further up the hill from the main Castle entrance.

Earth Hour Switch Off   by ALL!
Join us for the Earth Hour Switch-Off, wherever you are, on Saturday 25 March, 8.30-9.30pm. Take inspiration from Aberdeen City Council’s switch-offs, for the whole weekend (25-26 March), happening at Marischal College, Wallace monument and gardens, St Mark’s Church, and St Nicholas Kirkyard.  And then why not use the occasion to organiase a candle-lit dinner at your home with some friends, and talk about.... what action you can take to change things!!
